Although the Persian King Xerxes had a fiancée named Amastra, the daughter of Otanne, King of Susa, he was infatuated with Romilda, the lover of his younger brother Arsamenes. Romilda’s younger sister, Adelanta, loves Arsamenes and therefore urges Romilda to accept Xerxes’s love, but… From the Valle d’Ittria Music Festival—which has garnered attention for its many intriguing revival projects—comes the opera *Serse* by Francesco Cavalli, a prominent disciple of Monteverdi, the founder of Italian Baroque opera, who enjoyed immense popularity in the mid-17th century. The video CD, released by DYNAMIC to great acclaim, is now available. When one thinks of *Serse*, Handel’s opera—with its opening aria “Ombra mai fu”—is often the first thing that comes to mind, but the libretto was originally written for Cavalli by the playwright Niccolò Minato. Following its 1655 premiere in Venice, the work was restaged in Paris in 1660, greatly enhancing Cavalli’s reputation in France as well. Featuring established singers such as Carlo Vistoli in the title role and Gaia Petronne as Arsamenes, Xerxes’ younger brother, and young talents, combined with the expansive performance by the Orchestra Barocca Modo Antico, led by the master of Baroque opera Federico Maria Sardelli, has brilliantly revived this long-forgotten masterpiece for the modern era.
