This opera, *The North Star*, is a work that Meyerbeer adapted from the music of his earlier opera *Camp in Silesia*, which had premiered in Berlin in 1844 and enjoyed great popularity; he received an offer to stage a French-language version at the Opéra-Comique. It features a French libretto by Eugène Scribe and is characterized by a unique plot that blends pastoral romantic intrigue with scenes of military life. Possessing a unique character that is both a comedy and a serious drama, it is a compelling opera featuring lavish orchestration and frequent use of powerful choruses. Catherine’s “mad scene” toward the end is also a highlight. This recording captures a performance from the 1996 Wexford Festival. Vladimir Jurowski skillfully brings together the fresh voices of a young cast—including Flores, who was just beginning her career—and the brilliant orchestra. Naxos Japan
