Haruka is a village girl who has been toyed with by her lord Janusz. She shows up at the announcement of Janusz's engagement to Zofia, a daughter of a prestigious family, and accuses him of unfaithfulness, but Janusz deftly dismisses her. Yontek, a young man who cares for her, tells her to give up, and the villagers join her. Halka loses her mind over Janusz and tries to set fire to the church... Stanislaw (Stanislaw) Moneuszko, one of Poland's most famous composers. He was nine years younger than Chopin, but unlike Chopin, who never composed operas, he composed many operas and vocal pieces that skillfully used the Polish language, and is called the "father of Polish opera. The opera "Halka" is one of Monieuszko's best-known works, and is interspersed with powerful mazurkas sung by the villagers and other Polish folk dances that make for a rewarding listening experience. Performed by the Poznan State Moneuszko Opera Orchestra and Chorus, named after the composer, and featuring a superb group of Polish singers, the performance is a true testament to the work's value.
