Ancient Germania at the time of the birth of Christ. The Kelskians were a powerful people in this region. Under the leadership of their chief, Arminius, they defeated the Roman army at the Battle of the Forest of Toitburg and frustrated the Roman invasion of Germania, which is known as an epoch-making event. Maile composed his opera "The People of Kelski" about them at a time when Napoleon's armies were marching across Europe. It was during these uncertain times that the librettist, Rossi, was inspired by the courage of these ancient people. Family ties, romance, jealousy, and patriotism were all portrayed in this heroic work that inspired audiences of the time. This recording uses period instruments and recreates the sound of the first performance in 1808. Naxos Japan
