A small town in Germany, circa 1820. Wozzeck" is a tragic story based on an actual incident in which Wozzeck, a petty soldier living in this town, learns of an affair between his common-law wife Marie and the chief drummer, and after an argument, stabs her and himself gets swamped and drowns to death. Completely different from the operas of the late Romantic period up to that time, this novel and innovative work, with its strictly structured script and atonal music for each scene, is regarded as one of the greatest operas of the 20th century. The message of the work has remained unchanged throughout the ages. In this Houston production, the baritone Treichel, who is also popular in Japan, sings the despair and madness of the main character Wozzeck with warmth and resonance. Marie Schwanewilms, who specializes in Wagner, is also appropriately cast. The beautiful and deep sound of the Houston Symphony Orchestra led by Hans Graf also adds to the perfection of the performance. Naxos Japan
