Description:
Anton Urspruf was a composer born in Frankfurt. He studied under Ignaz Lachner and Joachim Raff, both direct pupils of Franz Liszt, and left behind many works in the tradition of the Weimar School. He was also close friends with Clara Schumann and Brahms, and worked as a teacher at the music school founded by Raff in Frankfurt, leaving a significant legacy as an educator. As a composer, he published numerous works ranging from solo piano pieces to large-scale orchestral works, as well as two operas—including this one—chamber music, and choral works; in the year of his death, he was also involved in the restoration of Gregorian chant. Although he was internationally recognized during his lifetime as a champion of the late Romantic movement, he was quickly forgotten after his death. This work is a love story reminiscent of Schumann and Weber, and it ends with a happy ending. This recording features the complete story, performed uncut, and is of great historical value.
