Hasse: *The Abandoned Dido* (3 CDs) Recently, there has been a worldwide resurgence of interest in the works of composer Johann Adolf Hasse. It is unfortunate that he remains relatively unknown in Japan, but Hasse’s works—which contributed significantly to the development of Baroque opera—are sure to leave a lasting impression after just one listen. One reason for this is his frequent use of outstanding countertenors. The beauty and allure of this unique timbre are rarely found in Romantic-era and later operas, which typically feature sopranos in leading roles. In this production of *Dido*, two countertenors shine brilliantly, exuding a mysterious charm. Barna-Sabadus, who sings the role of Ialba here, has already been featured on another album (OC830), where he also speaks at length about the appeal of Hasse’s music. The plot is also fascinating; this story by the genius librettist Metastasio, while based on the famous tale of Dido and Aeneas, possesses a completely different dramatic intensity, making it a magnificent work that hints at the intrinsic value of opera as it existed at that time.
