The composer Rossi (1812–1885) was born in Macerata. He was extremely popular in his day and was also renowned as an educator; he is known for having taught Ponchielli and Boito. This opera, *Cleopatra*, was the second-to-last work Rossi composed, commissioned by the Royal Opera House of Turin; however, it had not been performed at all in recent years and had fallen into obscurity. This time, however, it was brilliantly revived by a stellar cast led by the masterful Theodossiu and received a standing ovation from a packed house. The story is the familiar tale of love and hate between Cleopatra and Antony (Antonio). Several magnificent arias and the elegant banquet scene in Act I drew particular attention. Naxos Japan
