Rimsky-Korsakov’s (1844–1908) 14th opera—his second-to-last—combines the story of Kitezh, a town that sank to the bottom of a lake to escape a Tatar invasion, with that of Saint Fevronia, a saint who could communicate with animals. The hagiography of Saint Fevronia of Murom, written in the 6th century, is highly regarded as a source documenting Russia’s syncretic faith. This story is a rare blend of the hagiography, pantheistic folklore, and Christian miracles; its beautiful melodies, imbued with a strong sense of patriotism, have continued to be performed throughout Russia’s turbulent history. This opera, often referred to as the “Russian Parsifal,” will be presented during a 2008 tour in Italy. Naxos Japan
