“The Bride of Lammermoor,” a novel by Walter Scott that was a favorite of Donizetti (1797–1848). Based on this work, the most famous bel canto opera was born in 1835. Love, discord, betrayal, madness, murder… This tragic and scandalous story captivated audiences, and the spatter of blood on the heroine’s white dress seized the hearts of all who heard it. Singing the role of Lucia here is Desiree Lancatore, a familiar name in Japan. Please enjoy his rich voice, born of his robust physique, and his exquisite coloratura. Although this recording has already been released as a video, listening to it in audio-only format offers a different kind of enjoyment. In the famous “Mad Scene,” instead of the conventional flute, the “glass harmonica”—as specified in the score—is used. Its ethereal sound is like the wind blowing through Lucia’s broken heart.
