A diverse collection of small pieces by Charles Ives. The album includes a variety of his best-known ragtime and march pieces, including seven world premieres. The "Ragtime Dance" incorporates a hymn melody into ragtime, the experimental and unique "Chromatimelodtune (a term coined by combining chromatic, time, melody, and tune)" uses the twelve-tone technique, with strings and wind instruments playing their own melodies over incessant piano arpeggios, and the "Chromatimelodtune Chromatimelodtune (a word coined by combining chromaticism, time, melody, and tune)" and "Fugue in Four Keys" also show the characteristics of Ives' music, which incorporates polytonality. In addition, "Pond" and "Rainbow" showcase Ives' creativity through the use of a wide variety of instruments. In particular, "Rainbow" reflects a poetic expression inspired by the poetry of William Wordsworth. Also, "An Old Song Deranged" is an arrangement of a beautiful song that Ives dedicated to his mother. Other arrangements he worked on include Schubert's March and Schumann's Waltz.The performance will be given by the Orchestra New England (or the Navarre Symphony Orchestra in some cases), conducted by James Sinclair, a leading scholar of Ives, and will be optimally arranged for each piece.
