Description:
Florence Price has been called "the first black female symphony composer." In recent years, her works have received much attention, being performed at the BBC Proms and winning a Grammy Award. An album containing all of her concerto works is now available. There is no record of the Violin Concerto No. 1 ever being performed, nor is it clear who it was written for. In the first movement, the solo violin presents a series of new melodies. The second movement is characterized by cantabile melodies and blues elements. The third movement consists of complex rhythmic passages. The Violin Concerto No. 2 is a single-movement work written for her friend Minnie Jamberg, and is less black-music oriented than her other works. It was premiered in 1953 after Price's death and then forgotten for a while until a draft was discovered in 2009 and made available for performance again. The "Piano Concerto" is one of Price's most popular works. It is said that he was greatly influenced by his experience of listening to Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 performed by Schnabel and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.It is in three clear parts, with a particularly impressive middle section featuring a beautiful duet between solo oboe and piano. Dances in the Bushes is a colorful piano suite that incorporates traditional African-American dances and rhythms. The orchestral arrangement by William Grant Still is performed here. Naxos Japan
