A collection of guitar works by two contemporary American composers. Cruz's "Fantastic Grand Sonata" expresses the eerie atmosphere created by Poe in "The Fall of the House of Usher. My Name is Red" is inspired by a novel that depicts the pain and struggle of miniature painters in Istanbul, a city at the crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations, and uses sounds that evoke Islamic culture. The official title of "Four at III" is "four movements played with a capotasto on the third fret and a gradual re-tuning of the sixth string," allowing the audience to enjoy the changes in the guitar's timbre. Other pieces include a representation of Andersen's classic "The Girl Selling Matches" and a guitar version of "Dror Yikro," which is sung on the Jewish Sabbath. The performer, Robert Trent, is a professor of music at Radford University and a versatile performer, and the opening "Improvisation" is an encore-like small piece composed for Trent. Naxos Japan
