Description:
William Grant Still is an African-American composer. Born in Woodville, Mississippi, to educator parents, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He was a member of the Harlem Renaissance-African American Music Society, which flourished from 1919 to 1930. Although he briefly aspired to the practice of medicine, he pursued a career in music and became involved in the "Harlem Renaissance," an African-American art movement that flourished from about 1919 to 1930. He studied composition under Varèse and Chadwick, and his method of blending African American spirituals, jazz and blues idioms, and classical forms resulted in nearly 200 works, including nine operas and five symphonies. All of the works on this album are world premiere recordings. Still's faith and deep love for Africa is expressed in track 3, "Quit Dat Fool'nish," as well as his love for his mischievous dog, Shep. Track 13, "Lamentations," is a haunting farewell piece commissioned by conductor Fabien Sevitsky for a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Sibelius' birth. It was premiered by the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra and broadcast on Finnish National Radio the following year in 1966. Naxos Japan
