American composer William Bolcom (1938-), winner of a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Grammy awards, has written much familiar music, including ragtime. But he is also a musicologist and an acclaimed classical composer, and the rich music in, for example, Gospel Prelude (8.559695) and Music for Two Pianos (8.559244) is certainly genre-bending. Nevertheless, here Bolcom has an extremely serious face. The works of Federico García Lorca, a popular Spanish poet also popular in Japan, have inspired many artists on a wide scale, and Bolcom says that in setting Lorca's poems to music, he sought the help of the famous singer Placido Domingo, and after much discussion, put on music that seemed most appropriate He says, "I was very impressed by the surreal humor, the passion, and the sense of humor. Surreal humor, passion and mystery.The result is an impressive collection of songs that are a harmonious blend of these two pieces. Prometheus," based on an ancient legend, is a work for piano, chorus, and orchestra reminiscent of Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy.
