Description:
Joan Tower (1938-) is one of America's leading female composers. She was born in New Rochelle, New York, but spent her girlhood in La Paz, Bolivia, after her family moved there when she was 9 years old. The experiences she had here had a strong influence on her, especially her use of percussion instruments, which showed a unique sensibility. Returning to the United States as a high school student, she enrolled at Bennington College and later earned a doctorate in the arts at Columbia University. It was during this period that she absorbed the musical influences of many of her predecessors and developed a more flexible style and compositional approach. She actively promoted contemporary music and founded the "DA CAPO Players" to present her own works and continues to perform many of them. This album contains three relatively recent works.The "Stroke" is dedicated to her brother (paralyzed due to illness) and is a somewhat emotional piece that is imbued with anger over his illness. The Violin Concerto, written for violinist Elmer Oliveira, is an interesting mix of impressionistic and jazz. Chamber Dances, commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, is a compact work that makes full use of the virtuosity of the ensemble known as the "conductorless ensemble.
