Cage, John (1912-1992)
Description:
This is the second collection of flute works by John Cage (1912-1992), following the highly successful first collection. The works in this collection are also littered with "original ideas" that are distinctly different from the Western musical tradition. The first piece, "Solo," was originally part of the "Concert for Piano and Orchestra" (pp. 133-144), but it is extremely flexible and can be performed in 84 different ways, for which no score exists. It can be played as a duet or trio, and the time required is determined by the players during the performance. Here, the three designated instruments and numerous percussion sounds merge and develop into expressive phrases with an emphasis on silence. Cage's earlier work, "Minor Inventions," is a bit more melodic, but here, too, we hear carefully calculated music. It is an interesting work divided into six parts, each of which is composed of disconnected motifs that are repeated at a certain distance. The "Composition for Three Voices" is an even earlier work, in which chromatic phrases are developed through exquisite counterpoint. The "Sonata for Two Voices" is another work in the same vein. Hymnkus" is a title coined by combining two of his favorite words: Hymn and Haikus. The number 17, which is a reference to haiku, and a hymn (though quite abstract) expressed in the perfect fifth degree are repeated at regular intervals, creating a mysterious sound. I think it is faster to listen to it than to understand it.[Vol. 1...8.559773] Naxos Japan
