The piano sound in that “Unconquered People” Variations (8.559360) pushes forward with such intensity it seems to say, “Here’s more!” Based on a revolutionary song that anyone can hum, these 36 variations—written by making full use of every technical skill—possess a power that simply cannot fail to overwhelm the listener. His other works, too, are all imbued with a mysterious and peculiar flavor. In the “Fantasia,” commissioned by Aki Takahashi, he packs various elements into a melody that sounds vaguely familiar, transforming it into music that is ambiguous and rambling. The Six Novelettes were written by Jefski (1938–), who was suffering from an injury to his right hand, so that he could perform them for a week using only his left hand. “From the Deep Abyss” is an unconventional work that requires the pianist to recite a text by Oscar Wilde, whistle, and hum while playing the piano. The listener must enjoy not only the sound of the piano but even the “noise-like sounds” produced by the pianist. Whether one perceives this as a pleasure or a torment… Here lies one form of contemporary music. Naxos Japan
