This is a stylish album featuring four contemporary American chamber music works. The first piece, by Larsen, was inspired by a painting titled “Madonna and the Gun,” and its powerful music truly evokes the image of a wild horse. The second piece is by Lee Wen. The title, “Gulf Stream,” refers to the Gulf Stream. It follows a complex path, entering the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea and flowing through the Florida Straits into the Atlantic Ocean. Considered one of the factors contributing to global warming, it is an extremely thrilling ocean current—and the music is just as dramatic. Schickley’s quartet is a slightly melancholic piece of folk music, while Copland’s sextet is a lively, energetic work brimming with vitality.
