The young New Jersey-born composer Leshnoff (1973-) has been internationally recognized for his talent from early on. He is renowned as a composer of chamber music as well as orchestral works, and many groups and performers have commissioned works from him, and his new works are performed one after another. The three works on this album are a good example of his qualities and are easy to listen to, with a contemporary feel and a touch of nostalgia. The five-movement "Symphony No. 1," written at the request of conductor Stern, is written to praise all human beings, much like the message in Beethoven's "Ninth. The newly constructed music, using motifs from Gregorian chant, Guillaume Dufay's Mass, and 17th century Jewish liturgy, is sure to move you in ways you will not be able to describe. The "Double Concerto," in which two contemporary American virtuosos take the solos, is full of mysterious and lively sounds.I also recommend "Rush," which is as rushed and fun as its title.
