In honor of Rosa Parks, the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement”—who was far more than just “the woman who refused to give up her seat”—and who championed the rights of Black Americans This work was written in honor of Mrs. Rosa Parks, who was called the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” by the U.S. Congress. She became famous in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white person on a bus in Alabama and was arrested for violating racial segregation laws. This incident sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Rokunbe composed this music of prayer for her and for all people. It is a large-scale work requiring two choirs, four soloists, and a full orchestra. Elements of blues, jazz, African music, and gospel are woven throughout, and each soloist is given a distinct role.
