Composer Lawrence Dillon (1959–) lost 50 percent of his hearing due to an illness in childhood, but began composing at the same time he started piano lessons at age 7. He earned his doctorate from The Juilliard School in 1985 and has been active in a wide range of fields ever since. This album features nine works for violin, spanning a 25-year period, allowing listeners to trace the evolution of his compositional style. “Façade,” written in 1983, is a daring piece that defied the prevailing trend of composing “prickly,” esoteric music by deliberately presenting a melodic work. The moment when a melody reminiscent of salon music is suddenly replaced by dissonance is sure to shake the listener’s values to their core. Of course, it drew criticism from those around him at the time of its release; one professor reportedly even ordered his students, “You must never perform his music.” While this piece may have been born out of a rebellious spirit, wouldn’t it be accepted without any issue today? His 2008 work is also filled with a nostalgic sound that seems to look back on the past. Naxos Japan
