This collection of works, including two world premiere recordings, is an important glimpse into the prolific Hovhaness, whose exotic and romantic style remains the same, from "Frimian Heilig," composed in 1944, to the "Guitar Concerto," premiered in 1979, and the symphony, inspired by Appalachian folk poetry, written in 1985. The exotic and romantic style of his compositions remains unchanged. The liner notes by his Japanese wife, his lifelong companion, are informative and helpful in getting to know these works. World premiere recording. American composer Alan Hovhaness, of Armenian and Scottish descent, was a pioneer in creating trends, blending elements from classical to contemporary, East to West. Hovhaness once said. My goal is to create music, not for snobs, but for all people, music that is beautiful and healing."" which Mrs. Hovhaness called a real masterpiece, with a trumpet solo that evokes the heroic Armenian monk of the title. The technical and romantic Guitar Concerto by Hovhaness was composed for the Bolivian guitarist Juan Calderon. Symphony No. 60, "Leaning on the Appalachian Mountains," is an expression of Hovhaness's love for the music and folk literature of the Appalachian region.
