Description:
The latest disc in the series, appropriate for the 100th anniversary of his death, is a collection of works by the conductor who has become a familiar face in Naxos' performances of Nordic music, and who has put his personality to the test. Three types of works are included: the symphony, an early work; the "Variations," the fruit of his obsession with Norwegian folk songs; and the "Crusader Sigur," with its famous "Triumphal March," although the 20-year-old Grieg's sealed symphony in C minor, which he himself wrote in the score that it was forbidden to perform, is also included, Not many symphonies are this rich in content. It is not in the typical Griegian style, but has connections to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and the Danish composer Niels Garde. The music is aggressive, youthful, full of fresh musical ideas, and quite confident.The popular orchestral suite "Crusader Sigil," taken from the incidental music of the play of the same name, was often performed by Grieg himself on his overseas musical journeys. The finale, "Homage March," could be called a symphonic poem in its own right, progressing into a glorious, almost wild festive march. ［Comment courtesy of I.V. Inc.
