The Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece that deserves to be heard more widely, as it is an amalgam of sensuality, mystery, and impressionistic beauty of color. Together with the Concerto No. 2, which was a late work, Kahler's rich and powerful performance brings us closer to the real image of Shimanowski. Karol Szymanowski was born in Ukraine into a wealthy and artistic family. After the Russian Revolution, the family returned to their ethnic homeland of Poland, where Simanowski was inspired by his innate musicality. The lyrical Violin Concerto No. 1, dedicated to his distinguished friend, violinist Pawel Kochanski, is a work of striking textural clarity; the Violin Concerto No. 2, inspired by Kochanski's visit to Poland in 1932, was written in the last years of Szymanowski's life as a composer.
