Martinu spent the 1920s and ’30s in Paris, where he continued to compose while absorbing influences from jazz, tango, and other genres. This is the first installment in a series that brings together many of the stylish piano pieces he wrote during this period. The performance is by a pianist born in Prague who studied under masters such as Filkusny. Of Martinů’s total compositional output—more than 400 works—the collection of pieces for solo piano accounts for a remarkable 80 works, far outnumbering his orchestral and chamber music compositions. This CD is the first volume of the Naxos Complete Works of Martinů for Piano and primarily features works composed between 1920 and 1938, when Martinů was based in Paris—a major hub for various experimental musical techniques at the time. Martinu’s enthusiasm for expanding his compositional style is evident in the works included on this CD. These include “Three Sketches,” which incorporates the language of American popular dance and jazz, as well as impressionistic pieces such as “Window Facing the Garden” and “Sketches for a Dance.” “Sketches for a Dance” is a strikingly distinctive series of pieces with rhythms reminiscent of Dvořák, Stravinsky, and Roussel, who was Martinů’s teacher.
