This collection of works feels as though younger composers have reaped the “seeds” of Norwegian folk song collection sown by Grieg. On the Naxos label, Gimse shines with masterful performances of works by Grieg and Tveit; however, these are all pieces in which he excels, and the good old-fashioned folk culture resonates in every track. This is the perfect album for anyone who wants to explore Norwegian music beyond Grieg. This CD offers a glimpse into the rich and diverse facets of 20th-century Norwegian music—music deeply inspired by Norwegian folk songs. Egge’s breakthrough work, Piano Sonata No. 1, was inspired by the “Ballad of the Dream,” a legend said to date back to the Middle Ages that has long been sung to traditional melodies. Similarly, Egge’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is based on the exquisite traditional song “The Sun Goddess and the Snake King,” which is performed on this CD in an arrangement by Grieg. Works such as Egge’s “Holling Fantasy,” Berg’s “Norwegian Dance No. 2,” and Fuhlm’s “Watercolors” all draw upon the tradition of folk fiddle playing.
