While famous as educational music for children, it is also a collection of nationalistic miniatures with a unique sense of rhythm, and these characteristics come to the fore in Yando’s simple, unadorned performance. Another distinctive feature is that some pieces are performed with vocal accompaniment or on two pianos, evoking the atmosphere of folk songs. Béla Bartók’s collection of 153 piano pieces, *Mikrokosmos*, is a milestone in the history of piano music. Utilizing a wide variety of materials—from musical syntax and performance technique to rich regional flavors and folk-song derivations—the collection is arranged in order of increasing difficulty in both technical and musical terms, vividly reflecting the maturation of Bartók’s own musical world from 1926 to 1939. When asked in his later years about the significance of this title, Bartók replied: “*Mikrokosmos* is a series of pieces featuring many different styles, and it is perfectly acceptable to interpret it as representing a microcosm. Alternatively, it may also be understood as referring to something small—that is, the world of children.”
