Lloyd-Jones/Dyson: Symphony in G Major Dyson, who studied at Stanford, composed numerous orchestral works and church music in a style typical of modern British music. This album features the overture he wrote for the famous musical adaptation of *The Canterbury Tales*, a concerto grosso for string quartet and string orchestra, and a symphony brimming with rich melodies. Premiered in 1938, Dyson’s symphony was not until the 1990s that it finally came to be recognized as one of the greatest masterpieces among symphonies written in Britain during the 20th century. This symphony begins and concludes with a sense of a splendid open-air drama reminiscent of Dyson’s choral masterpiece *The Pilgrims of Canterbury*, yet it was also written during a time of hardship as the Great War loomed. Amid the beauty of its epic scale and passages reminiscent of a silvery world locked in ice, the work is interspersed with courtly-style dance movements and brilliant orchestral passages full of dramatic effect, reminiscent of Sibelius, Borodin, and Rimsky-Korsakov. The “Church Concerto” is a work that follows the splendid British tradition of creating masterpieces for string ensemble, stretching from Purcell to Tippett.
