This album features works by Weiss, whose extensive series covering his sonatas (currently up to Volume 8) is underway on Naxos. It also includes duo works by J. Hoffman, who is said to have been an accomplished mandolinist. Hoffmann’s works are part of the Viennese musical tradition of Mozart’s era, and there is no doubt that they are a valuable contribution that fills a gap in music history. The German lutenist Weiss and the Viennese mandolinist Hoffman were both considered great virtuosos in their respective fields at the time. Inspired by Weiss’s own practice of freely adapting his compositions, two technically demanding sonatas are performed here for lute and mandolin. Meanwhile, the two melodious sonatas by Hofmann for mandolin and bass (performed here on the lute) were composed in conjunction with the revival movement for the six-course mandolin, which was being performed at cultural gatherings in Vienna in the early 19th century.
