"Stokowski as an arranger" has been undergoing a reappraisal over the past decade or so. While new recordings from various labels have been released in addition to his own performances of his works, the recording conducted by his former student, Célébrière—for whom he also wrote the liner notes—is, so to speak, the definitive version. A rare inclusion is a short piece (just over 3 minutes) composed by Stokowski himself—music that perfectly captures the essence of a lyrical Russian romance. Leopold Stokowski was not only a great conductor of the 20th century but also continued to arrange music for orchestra throughout his life, creating orchestral arrangements for as many as 200 works originally composed for different ensembles. During Stokowski’s lifetime, most of his orchestral transcriptions could only be heard when he himself conducted them. However, after his death, an increasing number of conductors began to show interest in performing his colorful arrangements. When the Stokowski Society was founded in 1979, one of its primary objectives was to encourage the performance of the maestro’s orchestral transcriptions. In 2003, the Society’s board decided to propose to José Celebriel that he include works arranged by Stokowski in his concert repertoire and record them. At the start of the recording session—which we also attended—Celebriel addressed the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as follows: “I have no intention of making a copy of a Stokowski recording. Rather, I want to perform Mussorgsky’s music from a new perspective.” —The Stokowski Society—
