J.S. Bach's "Matthew Passion" conducted by Müller-Brühl is a sincere music with almost the same performers as the Mass (8.551219-20). The performance is of the type that creates a flavor in a story that moves along smoothly, and the charm of the work itself is oozing out. Although the great Bach composed five Passions, only two based on the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. John are known to exist today. The first draft of the "Matthew Passion" was written for two choirs and two orchestras and was first performed on Good Friday in 1727 or 1729. In addition to the biblical text, the recitative and arias mirror scenes from the Passion of Christ, and the chorale section uses the chorus to create a reflective meditation appropriate for vocal music. The entire work is divided into two parts: the first part recounts the scenes leading up to Christ's betrayal, and the second part recounts his condemnation and crucifixion.
