This is the second installment, following the previously released Nos. 1–3 (8.557496). Although he composed numerous string quartets during the same era as Haydn and Mozart, this recording serves to widely publicize that fact. Opus 2 is truly a masterpiece of the Classical period, on par with Haydn’s works. When Mozart happened to come across a newly published set of scores of Pleyel’s string quartets in 1784, he praised them highly and wrote the following letter to his father: “Pleyel’s works are a real headache for us. They are so well written and a great pleasure to listen to. I think you’ll immediately recognize who Pleyel’s teacher is. If, in time, Pleyel were to occupy the position Haydn holds today, it would be a stroke of good fortune for the musical world.” Mozart may have been referring to the Op. 2 string quartet collection. This collection was published that same year and dedicated to Haydn. It is a magnificent work, rich in melody, and it fully exploits the technical possibilities of the instrument.
