This collection features his Modernist-style Symphony No. 1 from his Berlin period, Symphony No. 2, composed after fleeing the Nazis and settling in Paris, and a suite from a musical he co-wrote with Ira Gershwin and others after seeking asylum in the United States. It is a collection of works representative of each of these three periods. Although Kurt Weill left behind numerous masterpieces of stage music, most of his orchestral and instrumental works were composed during his formative years as a composer. His “Symphony No. 1,” completed in 1921, is a radical and edgy work that reflects the uneasy political climate following World War I. When Hitler seized power in 1933, Weill went into exile in Paris, where he composed his “Symphony No. 2.” This symphony is one of the most overlooked masterpieces written in the 20th century. The Symphonic Nocturne is an excerpt from the 1940 Broadway musical *The Lady in the Dark*, which Weil co-wrote with Moss Hart and Ira Gershwin. It abounds with the lyrical quality—a blend of sweetness and bitterness—that characterized Weill’s theatrical works after his move to the United States.
