While they may not be considered the most important of Elgar’s orchestral works, they are by no means mere blind patriotism or empty posturing; rather, they reveal a richly fulfilled musical achievement. The “Pomp and Circumstance” marches, which enjoy enduring popularity, showcase orchestration that borders on the miraculous. The “First March,” in particular, is—to borrow Elgar’s own words—“a sound that really packs a punch,” and it is easy to see why it became famous as the melody for the British national anthem, “Land of Hope and Glory.”
