Description:
The composer himself was an excellent pianist, so the expression of his piano music is limitless. The symphonic dances are arrangements of orchestral works, and the two suites are original works. The overwhelming orchestral sound of this piece is developed by the two English pianists. The two suites for two pianos by Rachmaninoff are the most original works ever written for this instrument, and are as moving and beautiful in tone as the famous piano concertos. The early Suite No. 1, "Fantastic Pictures," shows the influence of Chopin, Liszt, and Tchaikovsky, but it is not a mere bloodless imitation. Suite No. 2, written in the interval of Rachmaninoff's work on the Second Piano Concerto, is written in a more mature style. The "Symphonic Dances," essentially a symphony in three movements and Rachmaninoff's last large-scale work, offers a glimpse into the composer's perspective as he reminisces about his life.The two-piano version was arranged by Rachmaninoff with the confidence of the composers of this orchestral work.
