At the moment you hear the beginning of the first movement, you may think, "Is this music difficult? But as soon as the introduction is over, the explosion of unmistakable Russian rhythms is unmistakable. This is the last symphony by Rubinshtein (1829-1894), composed in 1886. After the lively first theme comes the lyrical second theme. The second movement is graceful music reminiscent of a modest flower blooming. The lively middle section is also a joy to listen to. The third movement is bright, refreshing, and mischievous. The robust final movement is also full of Russian flavor. Don Quixote" was written in 1870. Rubinshtein carefully follows the story of the daring knight whose motifs have been used by many composers. It is a "hidden masterpiece" that deserves to be heard far and wide. Naxos Japan
