Penderecki: Violin Concertos No. 1 and No. 2 Penderecki, who once made his mark as a leading figure of the avant-garde, shifted his compositional style in the 1970s. Through a compositional approach sometimes referred to as “Neo-Romanticism,” Penderecki demonstrated that new musical expression was possible within traditional forms. His groundbreaking *Violin Concerto No. 1*, premiered by Isaac Stern, is pervaded by a somber mood throughout. In every section, the music is profoundly earnest, compelling the listener to experience a tension so intense it feels as if they are paralyzed. The Second Violin Concerto, premiered by Mutah, features more vigorous movement and a more colorful orchestration, giving it a different character from the First, yet the sustained tension remains unchanged.
