Description:
Arthur Sullivan is best known for his many operas written in collaboration with William Gilbert, including "The Mikado. Sullivan joined the choir of the Royal Chapel at an early age, entered the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 14, studied for two years, and then went to Leipzig to study conducting and composition. 1862 saw his return to London, where he composed incidental music for Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and then this ballet music, "The Magic Island. The Magic Island. This music, featuring a sailor who washes ashore on an island inhabited by fairies, was premiered at Covent Garden to great acclaim. In this world premiere recording, the parts cut by Sullivan at the premiere were restored by researcher Roderick Spencer Selwyn Tillett and reproduced in their complete form by conductor Penny. The other piece, "Thespis," was co-written with Gilbert, but is an opera and pantomime of which only fragments survive today. This one is also performed in a ballet restoration by Spencer and Tillett. Naxos Japan K.K.
