Yet hardly anyone would be able to name “Calischimi”—that’s how Naxos dares to venture into such unexplored territory. The Italian composer Carrissimi is known for his achievements in establishing the oratorio. Even in these smaller-scale motets, the composer’s mastery—and his deep understanding of the charm of the human voice—is on full display. I highly recommend this album as the next listen for enthusiasts of early Baroque music, such as Monteverdi. The ensemble, named after the composer, consists of five male vocalists and an instrumental ensemble. Please take note of their beautiful performance as well.
