If you listen to “Dance of the Swords” and feel it’s right up your alley, then this album featuring highlights from Khachaturian’s works is an absolute must-have. The ballet scores for “Gayaneh” and “Spartacus” are simply overwhelming—the rich, dense sound is a bit loud and makes you break a sweat, but it’s a thrilling experience. Then again, there are also adagio-style pieces, and the rich melodies are simply irresistible. And while it may not stand out at first glance, “Masquerade” is a track you simply can’t miss—the nobility of the waltz, in particular, is absolutely superb. As the pinnacle of 20th-century orchestral music, these are works I could listen to forever.
