Agricola, active at the height of Renaissance music, is one such figure. Although he was a significant contemporary of Josquin as a Flemish composer of secular songs, he has never been the subject of a comprehensive recording. At last, we can experience the sound of this master of counterpoint—who was highly skilled in the typical three-part chanson techniques of the 15th century—firsthand. While the sound is austere and not particularly pleasing to the ear, this release is a must-listen for music historians and enthusiasts.
