Description:
Dalbert was a distinguished pupil of Liszt and a pianist whose skill was such that his teacher called him “our young lion”; however, he is best known for his focus on composition. While his two piano concertos contain elements reminiscent of his teacher—such as brilliant piano technique and the use of cyclic themes—they are dominated by a lyrical mood that could be described as ethereal. The First Concerto, a major early work dedicated to his teacher, is unique in that its sound is closer to Schumann and Brahms than to the music of the teacher to whom it is dedicated. Although the Second Piano Concerto also makes full use of weighty piano techniques, it remains, as always, restrained in its flashiness; through the appeal of this “serious composer, Darbel,” one can discern his mature originality.
