Palestrina: Messa sine nome, Mass “The Armed Man,” and a collection of motets Palestrina, a genius who left behind vocal works that truly make one realize just how beautiful polyphony can be. From his vast collection of masses, we present two pieces that are frequently performed. “Cine Nome” means “nameless,” and this Mass is said to be based on the melody of a motet by an unknown composer. The Mass based on the folk song “Rom Arme” (“The Armed Man”), which was popular among composers of the time, offers an intriguing opportunity to compare it with works by other masters on this Naxos recording. For choral music fans, it’s a delight to hear two motets from his extensive collection that are particularly popular in Japan—“As the Deer Longs for Streams” and “By the Rivers of Babylon.” Note that an organ accompaniment has been added to all performances to support the lower registers.
