Founded in 2014, the early music ensemble “Cembales”—as its name suggests, “without the use of a harpsichord”—features a unique lineup combining female vocalists with recorders, violas da gamba, plucked string instruments, and percussion—all without a harpsichord. With its experimental spirit and vibrant stage presence, the ensemble has won numerous awards and is gaining increasing attention. For this production, the ensemble welcomes poetry slammer Florian Winters to boldly reimagine Handel’s three-act opera *Floridante*, condensing it into a drama lasting just under an hour. By fusing a performance rich in improvisation and infused with ethnic flavors with contemporary spoken word, the production depicts the universal conflict between “power, money, and war” and “human love” as a kind of wheel of fate. Set against energetic and emotionally rich music, the production portrays people desperately struggling against a ruthless fate, powerfully conveying the theme that “love triumphs in the end.” Naxos Japan
