The guitar sextet "Guitarra a Seis" was formed in Zurich in 2012. The members come from a wide variety of countries, including Germany, Brazil, Poland, and Switzerland, and their personalities and playing styles are diverse. The composers of the recorded works range from the Baroque to the contemporary, from Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, France, Switzerland, and Brazil, bringing out the expressive power of the unusual performance format of six guitars in various ways. The composers' competitive playing on counterpoint in the third movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, the exuberance of the Rossini crescendo, and the delicacy of the Ma mère roi, are all fascinating. Some of the contemporary pieces are serious, while others, like the "Pan-American" suite by member Kreps, have a pops groove. Sergio Assado's "Juan Sebastian's Bar," named after Bach, is a humorous piece in which a Bach melody suddenly appears in the midst of a pop Brazilian sound. This is a program that is sure to be applauded at a live performance, and one that should be enjoyed without thinking too hard. Naxos Japan
