In 1939, Michelangeli won the Geneva International Music Competition, and that same year he made his recording debut at HMV in Milan. Three years later, in 1942, he recorded two concertos for Telefunken in Germany in the same studio. While Grieg's concertos are straightforward and poetic, Schumann's are free, improvisational, and dazzlingly luminous. Despite these wonderful performances, Schumann, who was known for his "dislike of recordings," never recorded the two concertos in the studio again. He may have thought that this recording was a youthful indiscretion, but is it a wishful thinking that he would like to hear a matured expression of the concertos? Naxos Japan
