Mark Obert-Sohn reissue. Elgar, who celebrated the 150th anniversary of his birth this year, is famous for his many recordings of his own compositions. This recording includes his large-scale Symphony No. 2, along with an alternate take of the third movement. The Cello Concerto with Harrison as soloist has been heard as the standard for this piece. Elgar's second recording of his own Symphony No. 2 was made only a year and a half after the first machine-blown recording of the piece was released. It was made on June 2, 1927, for the dual reasons of celebrating the fruits of the technological innovation of electroblowing and Elgar's own 70th birthday. This performance of the symphony and the two equally masterful recordings of the cello concerto demonstrate the unique insight that only the composer's own compositions can provide. The first movement of the symphony opens with an undulating surge of energy, while the second movement is not lost in sentimentality, and the naturalness of the treatment of the transitional passages is remarkable.This allows for a meaningful expression of the pungency and emotional drive that runs throughout the piece, which is so important in all of Elgar's works. From the Cello Concerto, where the tempo is faster than in most recent recordings, one can hear a wailing that is far from the sentimental resignation that is so common in recent performances of this piece. ［Comment courtesy of I.V.
