Not only does it showcase the brilliance of Martinelli, for whom *Otello* was a signature role, but it also captures the vibrant stage presence of Rateberg and Tibet, offering a charm entirely distinct from the current Levine era. Featuring a lineup of renowned singers, an outstanding orchestra, and a celebrated conductor, this live broadcast recording of Verdi’s *Otello* from February 1938 is a fiery performance and a precious record capturing the Met at the height of its interwar era. Giovanni Martinelli, widely regarded as the definitive Otello, perfectly embodies every nuance of the role—from love and jealousy-driven madness to remorse over the murder—and delivers a performance so authentic that it leaves everyone in awe. Among the famous American-born Verdi baritones, Lawrence Tibbett was the first to emerge and, moreover, the most accomplished. The meaningful mezzavoce phrases he delivers in pieces such as the “Brindisi” leave a powerful impression. German-born soprano Elisabeth Reitberg made her name primarily at the Met, excelling in roles from both German and Italian repertoires. Her pure legato and vocal timbre were highly acclaimed at the time.
