Description:
On Palm Sunday, April 1939, the Matthew Passion made its historic mark since Mendelssohn's revival performance. The performance, conducted by the master conductor Mengelberg, was miraculously recorded live. The sound of the audience sobbing in the middle of the 47th movement is a well-known part of the recording. No conductor since then has been able to achieve such dramatic and religious exuberance. Some people may call the use of agogic and portamento in this recording a "Romantic revisionism," but this recording proves beyond doubt that academic correctness does not equal artistic perfection. This recording is aesthetically valuable in the sense that it throws a stone at the false puritanism.
